Episode 12 – Full Transcript
In today’s episode, we’re going to be talking about vibes
Michelle: Hey, everyone. My name is Michelle.
Lindsay: And I’m Lindsey, and you’re listening to nurse verse. Hey, guys. In today’s episode, we’re going to be talking about vibes.
Michelle: And what exactly do we mean by vibes?
Lindsay: So when we say vibes, we are referring to the feelings you get from a person, place, or thing.
Michelle: Yes. And we want to talk about this because we have some control over creating our own vibes and our own environments and around certain situations or places. Maybe not people, but the. The other two, for sure. So has anyone ever gone somewhere and you felt like that place had a very specific vibe? Like there was, like, an energy or there was a feeling around that place?
Lindsay: Absolutely. Sometimes it’s really good. Like, great vibes. Or other times it’s like, no.
Michelle: Or it’s very. It’s very fitting for what it is. Like, restaurants will do a really good job at creating a vibe or creating that atmosphere to fit what type of food that they’re serving or, what kind of experience they want you to have when you’re going to eat at their restaurant. People can do this really well in their homes. Like, if you’ve ever noticed, you go into certain people’s homes and you feel a very specific vibe or energy, like.
Lindsay: Going to grandma’s house, maybe there’s a certain smell that always lingers.
Michelle: Yeah. There’s so many variables. There’s so many facets to it, whether it’s, like, smells, the lighting, the decor, the color of the paint on the wall. It all, like, contributes to this vibe, this feeling you get when you’re there. And so we want to talk about vibes specifically in the home, because that’s the easiest one that you can control and create whatever it is that you want to create and that feeling you want to have in your own home.
Creating your own vibe is gonna look different from person to person
And so, for example, we want to just talk about our own home and how we’ve been very deliberate in creating certain vibes that we enjoy and that feeling that we enjoy when we’re in our home. and I would say, especially as it pertains to our living room.
Lindsay: Yeah. Our couch is definitely a focal point. It’s so comfy. There’s many pillows.
Michelle: Yeah. Yeah. We have, like, an l shaped couch that’s deep, and you could literally sleep on it.
Lindsay: Why is it so comfortable? Again, why is couch sleep better than regular sleep?
Michelle: Yes. Also are very specific about the lighting, so we hate just, like, overhead, bright, luminescent lighting. It’s just.
Lindsay: It’s, too harsh, you know, like.
Michelle: In the wise words of will, and grace gaze needs soft lighting.
Lindsay: And soft lighting. We do have that.
Michelle: Lots of soft lighting lamps. Lamps with, like, indirect light and the soft, like.
Lindsay: Yeah, they’re in the corner. It’s almost like the Pixar lamp, but. A little bit more of a lampshade. But anyways, we also have lights in our backyard.
Michelle: Oh, yeah. Twinkly lights.
Lindsay: Twinkly lights.
Michelle: Lots of twinkly. Lots of string lights in the backyard.
Lindsay: Yeah. And then we, Well, she loves to watch or listen to golf in the background as, soft white noise or whatever.
Michelle: I love the whispering.
Lindsay: Yeah.
Michelle: But also it’s just like, so peaceful to me. Golf is just so calming and peaceful.
Lindsay: I mean, our cats like it too.
Michelle: Yeah.
Lindsay: Oatly loves golf, so he’s, he’s down for the vibe.
Michelle: And we have a backlit lighting on the back of our tv, and that light bounces off of the white wall behind it. And it kind of creates like an aquarium feel. Almost like, like really nice soft lighting as well. Or indirect lighting. And lots of blankets. Yeah, it’s very cozy.
Lindsay: And we have, like, white walls and stuff. And very delicately decorated, I would say.
Michelle: Yeah.
Lindsay: Very, limited things out. And that’s just the vibe we like.
Michelle: Yeah. Yeah. Because, like, for me personally, I don’t, I. When there’s a lot of things and a lot of clutter, that is more stressful to me than relaxing. But that might not be the case for everyone. Like, you create your own environment based off of, like, the feeling and what you like, what you enjoy. Like, some people, like having things and decorations and memorabilia and things out because that feels cozy to them.
Lindsay: Yeah. Like, my, my old apartment in Virginia and my old room, like, I didn’t have many things, but I had that one room that was mine, so I had so many lights.
Michelle: Yeah.
Lindsay: And just to create a comfy, safe.
Michelle: Environment surrounded by, like, the things that reminded you of all that stuff. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So it’s like creating your own vibe is gonna look so different from person to person. Some people, you might create your own vibe that you love, and then somebody else just, is not comfortable at all in your environment. Some people, like minimalist, nothing, no things out. I love that personally. But some people, ah, might be super uncomfortable around that. And also the color scheme, too, that we have is very neutral. Neutral. Lots of neutral. Other than green, I would say green is our accent colors throughout the house. Green and black. It’s a lot of white. Beige. And then contrast with some, like, black metals in the house. And then, like, a leafy green or fake plants. Fake plants inside because the cats will destroy.
Lindsay: That’s true.
Michelle: Any real plant we can.
Lindsay: Even some of the fake plants were like, come on. Yeah, seriously.
Michelle: They’ll still try to eat them. But,
Lindsay: But anyways, that is how we’ve created our vibe within our house and some.
Michelle: Other, like, distinct ways that I think creating vibes in your house depending on where you live too. Like, we have guest room. We put up a very Florida wallpaper with lots of, like, palms and Florida plants as, is the pattern of the wallpaper. Because we wanted. When people come and stay with us, we wanted them to feel like they’re in Florida. They’re in some place tropical. They’re on vacation. We wanted to, like, create that feeling. and also, I feel like my parents do a really good job of this as well.
Creating the vibes that you enjoy in your own home helps relax better
They live in Cape Cod. And when you go to their house, you feel like you’re in Cape Cod. Like, their house is the epitome of Cape Cod. Just like, the exterior and the interior, it’s very New England beachy.
Lindsay: They did a really great job.
Michelle: yeah, like every, like, you walked.
Lindsay: Into, like, an, rh magazine and it was promoting, yeah.
Michelle: Specifically made for,
Lindsay: Yeah, they nailed the vibe.
Michelle: Yeah, exactly like every aspect. Yeah. The temperature will definitely make a big impact, too, because, for example, at night, we like to turn our ac way down to, like, 60 something.
Lindsay: And my sister even said, it looks like you guys live in Alaska with how many sweatshirts and, like, the blankets you’re using.
Michelle: Yeah. yeah. Cause, like, at night, I wanna put my sweatpants and sweatshirt on and I wanna be comfy, cozy under a blanket on the couch. I. Even though it’s like 90 degrees outside still.
Lindsay: Yeah. You wouldn’t know by looking at us, but we love. We love being cozy.
Michelle: Yeah. Why creating those vibes in our house is so important to us is because.
Lindsay: It puts us in a positive, like, headspace. Like, if you feel comfortable somewhere, you’re gonna thrive.
Michelle: Yeah. You’re gonna be yourself and it helps you relax better. So if you create the vibes that you enjoy in your own home, it will be so much easier for when you’re done with your work day, when you come home from work, that for you to just relax and be able to relax much quicker because you feel comfortable and cozy. And, I think we underestimate how much that can impact our ability to decompress at the end of the day and how much we actually can have control over that in any situation.
Creating a relaxing work environment can make your job easier and more productive
Segueing into vibes at work.
Lindsay: It’s something that not a lot of people think about or that they think that, oh, it’s already set. I work in an office. I can’t add anything.
Michelle: Yeah. And, like, depending on where you work, we don’t know. Maybe some people aren’t allowed to change things, but, yeah, maybe you can or.
Lindsay: Maybe you don’t know, and you do it anyways.
Michelle: Yeah. It’s easier to ask for forgiveness and permission.
Lindsay: Yes. Howard Schultz said that, and I took it to heart.
Michelle: yeah.
Lindsay: So at my office, we have white walls, and it’s pretty sterile.
Michelle: Medical office.
Lindsay: Medical office.
Michelle: Literally.
Lindsay: Yeah. So we are also facing a window. Windows. And so there’s, like, natural light all the time. So we turn off the lights a lot of the time because it’s really bright in there. And we’ve added fake plants. We’ve added real plants. We even have an avocado tree in our office.
Michelle: Nice.
Lindsay: And it just, like, creates a nice vibe.
Michelle: And string lighting.
Lindsay: Yeah. We actually just added string lights, which are so, so nice. It’s, like, am I in my old dorm room, or am I at my office right now? And then also, we have a diffuser.
Michelle: Nice.
Lindsay: And we’ve got different scents. And, it’s. It’s really incredible. It’s nice because we spend eight to 10 hours there every day.
Michelle: Yeah.
Lindsay: And you want to feel cozy and.
Michelle: Yeah.
Lindsay: Happy in your workspace.
Michelle: Exactly.
Lindsay: So we’ve created that.
Michelle: And you’ve even gotten. So many of the doctors have commented on it, and, like, other people, they enjoyed it.
Lindsay: They love coming back to, like, hang out with, us or, like, tell us something. They, like, stay a second longer to enjoy the vibes.
Michelle: Yeah. Because when you’re at work, a lot of people just gonna associate stress and busyness and go, go, go, go. But if you have an environment where you feel like you can also kind of relax into, it’s gonna make your job so much more enjoyable and easier and less stressful because you now have added that element of comfort into it, which, is not going to diminish your progress or your I. Productivity. I feel like it actually helps it.
Lindsay: Yeah. There’s a sense of calm back there and relaxation. Even though we are doing our work, it’s just a healthier work environment because we are relaxed and enjoying, like, the lo fi music that we’re playing.
Michelle: Oh, yeah.
Lindsay: And, like, the scent in the air is nice. And then the lights, it’s just. Yeah, it’s really comforting.
Michelle: Yeah.
Lindsay: And feeling like that and then also dealing with stressful situations, which we do, it just makes it better.
Michelle: Yeah. Easier to manage.
Lindsay: Yeah. Making the stressful things easier to deal with because we’re in a. We have a good vibe going on.
Michelle: Yeah, yeah, exactly. I think it has such a massive impact that people don’t even, realize it sometimes until you do all these changes, until you create this environment, and then people notice after the fact, like, wow, what a difference. Even for where I used to work at a wellness place, it was the same thing. It was like the office that I had where I would have my clients come back and give them intramuscular shots or talk to them about, you know, their health needs. The office was so sterile. It was just, like, blank. There was no white walls, the, like, illuminescent lighting. It was awful. And so people would kind of just, like, come in. There was no place for them to sit. They would just stand there, and if they were getting, like, an intramuscular shot, they, like, wouldn’t know where to stand. And just, like, it was always, like, so uncomfortable. So one of the first things I did when I was allowed to, I started to bring in my own decorations and my own lighting, and I turned that office into a calm, soothing, comfortable environment. I got, like, a little couch. I put up, like, a painting on the wall. I did string lighting. I put a diffuser. I made it more of a relaxing. I tried to go for more spa environment, but my general manager at the time, he called it, vibe lounge. and it was. It was like, it was a vibe when you went in there. And ever since I had done that, I had, my coworkers wanted to come in and just hang out because it was comfortable and cozy, and they felt like they could relax and we. We could just chat. And even my clients would come in, and I noticed a massive difference in their response and their energy to the room. They’d be like, wow, this is really nice. And they’d feel comfortable, and they’d come in, and they’d immediately sit down on the couch, start having casual conversation with me. They felt more comfortable. Now they weren’t so, like, tense and nervous and stressed, or even if we were just talking about their health history, they seemed to more relaxed and more able to open up to me, which was extremely helpful. And I got to have really good, like, in depth, conversations that I feel like we were able to make progress and growth. So, yeah.
Vibes can pertain to so many different situations or scenarios
After seeing the response in my clients and their reaction to vibe lounge, I am a huge proponent of changing up the vibes in your workplace. To match the energy or the situation that you’re trying to create, because you could do it. Like, let’s say, if you want to create a calming environment, super, super easy to do that. Just like, look at any spa, look at any massage place. Like they, with, between the music.
Lindsay: Yeah.
Michelle: Low lighting, low lighting, blankets, essential oil diffuser, all that stuff. Yeah. Blankets. super, super easy to do it, but it’s super impactful versus if you’re trying to create a more intensive environment, let’s say, like at a gym, you can also do the same thing, but it’s probably going to look the opposite of a spot. You’re going to have brighter lighting, intense music, more aggressive colors and decor, things to get people’s energy up. And I think, it’s like, once you pay attention to it, then you notice how much of a difference it does make and why not use it to our advantage, especially in the workplace?
Lindsay: And then vibes can also relate to a person, whether good or bad. If you’re creating a positive, like, calming environment, it kind of settles, the bad vibes from a specific person.
Michelle: Oh, like, if you have that one person. If you have that one person at work.
Lindsay: Yeah. If you have that one person at work.
Michelle: Yes.
Lindsay: I know that pertains to a lot of people.
Michelle: Yeah. There’s always one.
Lindsay: Like, as long as the environment is good.
Michelle: Yeah. It can offset some of that.
Lindsay: Yeah. It can offset poo poo energy. Yeah. And hopefully, hopefully it’ll turn them around.
Michelle: Yeah, yeah.
Lindsay: Change their vibe.
Michelle: Hopefully, yes, absolutely. Vibes can pertain to so many different types of situations or scenarios, people, places. but, like, another big one for us that we really emphasize is when we’re cooking at night, when we’re making dinner, we really like to use the music to set the scenes. Since with Lindsey’s allergies and both of our sensitivities, per se, we prefer to cook most of the time, it’s kind of hard for us to go out or it’s a little bit more strenuous on our bodies to go out to eat frequently. So we like to bring the restaurant experience into the house.
Lindsay: So if we’re making, like, italian food and we’ve got an italian playlist in the background.
Michelle: Yeah.
Lindsay: Or if we are making mexican, we’ve got some spanish music going on.
Michelle: Mariachi. I love mariachi music.
Lindsay: Yeah.
Michelle: So good.
Lindsay: Or if we want to pretend like we’re going on a fancy date night or whatever, we’ve got some smooth jazz in the back.
Michelle: Yes. Love the smooth jazz. Smooth jazz. Is good to just make it feel like you’re having a high end experience.
Lindsay: Yes.
Michelle: Pour yourself a glass of wine. Make sure that lighting is low. It really does make it, like, oh, we always say, like, fine dining experience activated. Like, yeah, it’s a vibe at our.
Lindsay: House when we cook, for sure.
Michelle: Yes, 100%. And I, emphasize the music. The lighting is key, but also, it’s like when everything matches, when the food matches, the environment matches, the music matches, the scent. Like, if you light a candle, it really feels like. It’s like you’re transformed. You do feel like you’re having an experience. Why not? If you’re gonna. We have to eat dinner.
Lindsay: Yeah.
Michelle: Every. Or you have to eat to survive. Okay. So if you are going to eat your meal, why not make it fun? Why not make an experience?
Lindsay: Why not, you guys?
Michelle: Why not?
Lindsay: Why not?
Michelle: Like, why do you think so many people like to go out to eat? Because it’s an experience. maybe it’s also because you don’t want to do the work, to cook and clean and all that, which is your vibe. That very valid point. So we say all of this because the point is, make your own vibes. Just create your own vibes and have fun with it. We have so much fun with it. And I think the more you pay attention to it and notice it, you appreciate it more and you enjoy it more, and then you start applying it to different parts of your life as well.
Lindsay: Like, I felt comfortable enough to create the vibes at work, and it landed, you know?
Michelle: Yes. It made such a big difference. I feel like it did, just from the stories you’ve told me when you come home.
We would love to hear other ways people create positive vibes in their homes
But we would also love to hear other things that people do to create vibes in their own home. Work specific scenarios. what you think is the most impactful, what you notice, and there’s no wrong way. It’s just what you like, what you enjoy, and what makes you feel comfortable.
Lindsay: Yeah. Positive vibes, guys. Positive vibes.
Michelle: Yeah, more positive vibes.
Lindsay: Good vibes only.
Michelle: Good vibes only. That’s right. That’s what it is.
Lindsay: Yeah. Well, thanks, guys, for listening.
Michelle: Okay, thanks. Bye.
Lindsay: Without moving the bike, that was impressive.
